A large fire broke out Thursday at Monroe Energy LLC's Trainer refinery in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, sending a column of black smoke visible for miles and threatening operations at a facility that processes about 185,000 barrels of crude per day.
"Our on-site Fire Response Team was immediately activated, deploying multiple emergency response resources, including fire and foam tanker vehicles, mobile deluge guns, and stationary high flow firewater suppression systems," Monroe Energy officials said in a statement. The company also activated the Industrial Firefighting Group, a consortium of emergency responders, to assist with containment efforts.
The fire was reported around 11:30 a.m. local time on the 4100 block of Post Road in Trainer, roughly 20 miles southwest of Philadelphia. Video from news helicopters showed fire crews dousing the blaze from multiple angles. No injuries have been reported, and the cause remains under investigation. Trainer Borough Police said crews are working to locate the source of the fire and extinguish it.
The Trainer refinery is one of the largest on the U.S. East Coast, supplying gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel to markets across the Northeast. A prolonged shutdown could tighten regional fuel supplies just as the summer driving season reaches its peak, potentially pushing up wholesale gasoline prices along the Atlantic Coast. Monroe Energy said perimeter air monitoring showed no risks to the community, and no evacuations have been issued. Chester officials asked residents to avoid the area out of an abundance of caution.
The refinery, acquired by Monroe Energy — a subsidiary of Delta Air Lines — in 2012, has faced operational disruptions before. A similar fire incident in 2019 led to a multi-week shutdown that reduced regional fuel inventories by an estimated 2 million barrels, according to Energy Information Administration data. The current incident's duration will depend on how quickly crews can contain the blaze and assess damage to the process unit involved.
