Anthropic released Claude Opus 4.8 on May 28, accelerating its upgrade cycle to 41 days, as the AI lab races to keep pace with OpenAI and Google while preparing its powerful Mythos model for public release.
"Opus 4.8's tendency to proactively flag issues with the inputs and outputs of an analysis is something other models routinely miss and leave to users to catch," Bridgewater Associates said in a testimonial cited by Anthropic.
The model is 4 times less likely than Opus 4.7 to miss flaws in code it produces and shows lower rates of misaligned behavior, according to Anthropic's alignment assessments. Pricing remains unchanged at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. A new Fast Mode running at 2.5 times speed costs $10 and $50 per million tokens, respectively — 3 times cheaper than prior fast-mode pricing. Anthropic also introduced Dynamic Workflows, a research preview that enables Opus 4.8 to manage complex tasks across hundreds of parallel subagents, and Effort Control, letting users adjust thinking effort from Low to Max.
The accelerated release cycle — Opus 4.7 launched just 41 days prior, compared with the 3-to-7-month cadence for Anthropic's Sonnet and Haiku models — reflects the competitive pressure from OpenAI's Codex and Google's Gemini Flash. Anthropic said it expects to bring Mythos-class models to all customers "in the coming weeks" once cybersecurity safeguards under Project Glasswing are complete. Mythos, which can autonomously develop professional-level cyberattacks, has raised concerns among executives and world leaders about its potential impact.
The Opus 4.8 launch follows a chilly reception to Opus 4.7, which some users found disappointing. Early testers reported that Opus 4.8 is "more likely to flag uncertainties about its work and less likely to make unsupported claims," according to Anthropic's launch post. The model can now carry out codebase-scale migrations across hundreds of thousands of lines of code from kickoff to merge, using the existing test suite as its benchmark.
Anthropic confirmed it is collaborating with other companies on Project Glasswing, an effort to safeguard critical software from AI-driven exploits. "The advantage will belong to the side that can get the most out of these tools," the company warned, acknowledging the dual-use nature of its most advanced models. The company is making "swift progress" on developing safeguards and expects to bring Mythos-class models to all customers in the coming weeks, it said in the Opus 4.8 launch post.
The reliability improvements in Opus 4.8 address a key barrier to enterprise AI adoption — the tendency of large language models to generate plausible but incorrect outputs. By flagging uncertainties and reducing unsupported claims, Anthropic is targeting the trust deficit that has kept many financial services and healthcare firms from deploying AI in customer-facing roles.
